In June, a scientist in CDC’s bioterrorism (BT) rapid response laboratory in Atlanta removed an extract of wild-strain anthrax from a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) environment without confirming the deadly bacteria were killed. Both the research scientist and dozens of other CDC staff members were potentially exposed to the possibly live microbes, which prompted questions about laboratory biosafety and biosecurity both within and outside the government.
