In Egyptian mythology the Sphinxes were creatures with human heads (both male and female heads were used) and the body of lions. There are various differences in the mythology behind these creatures. According historians the symbolism behind the Egyptian Sphinxes is unclear, but some say that it has to do with the god Ruti who guarded the entrance to the underworld.
