The first student publication of Austin High, The Comet, began as "A Monthly Journal of School Life, Devoted the the Interests of the Students of the Austin High School." In later years, The Comet would transform into the modern year book format familiar to us today. There are 5 issues in Volume I, published in December 1897 through May 1898. The first issue was printed on a small hand printing press owned by a student. At that time, Austin High was located in the Temporary Capitol Building.
