Named after an English village in North Dorset, Bryanston was established as a suburb of Sandton in 1969. In later years, when municipal boundaries had to be revised following the fall of Apartheid, Bryanston was merged with Johannesburg to form part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
